Dr. Chiori KODAMA is a medical doctor with diverse experience in the areas of health emergencies and humanitarian response across various complex settings. Her professional career began as a physician specializing in infectious diseases and health emergencies, further strengthened by training in epidemiology. She initially served the government of Japan as a founding member of the IDES (Infectious Diseases and Health Emergencies Specialist) before joining WHO.
Dr. Kodama has worked in multiple locations and countries in response to outbreaks, health emergencies, and humanitarian crises. Her roles have included working with the WHO Health Emergencies Programme at headquarters, WHO emergency field responses, and serving at the WHO Country Office for Ethiopia. Since 2019, she has been with the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office as a medical officer, leading high-threat pathogens and emerging vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, case management and clinical operations, including oxygen scale-up initiative, within the Infectious Hazard Prevention and Preparedness unit of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme
